I consider Yves Saint Laurent to be the greatest couturier of my lifetime (1970s to today). He was asked early in his career when he took over the the House of Dior what his motto was. Young Yves replied "its better to have honor than to have honors". I really respect him for that. He could have chosen to say something witty or bold, but he gave the fashion world something new.... humility. All accounts of Yves Saint Laurent illustrate a shy, quiet man, but that early motto shows his integrity and pride. I believe his pride of self shows through in all his creations. I put on a vintage YSL dress, and I feel taller, smarter, stronger. Its a weird and wonderful phenomenon that makes me reach for my velvet YSL blazer whenever I need to meet the world head on.
