.. Halston: 1970s Pleated Goddess Gown

..One of the great joys of owning Swank Vintage is the amazing feedback I get from vintage lovers all over the world. Just last month I received an e-mail from the a former head of Halston's "Made to Order" department. She wanted to correct me as I used the word "couture" when describing a Halston creation, which apparently is a big faux pas. According to this gal, Halston hated the inference associated with “couture” and used the term "made to order" instead. She also informed me that in his early years he never charged more than $1000 for a dress, on the advice of Babe Paley who thought paying more than that would be vulgar. Of course, the cost for many pieces far surpassed the $1000 he charged, but his fame soared as did his exclusive client list.  "Halston was a simple middle American guy who thought every woman in the US ought to be able to buy good design at a reasonable price. "

..This amazing gown may well have been on of his "made to order" pieces as I have never seen this style before. The fabric feels like silk, but it may be a rayon or synthetic. It seems to be permanently pleated, there are yards and yards of the glorious folds. The bodice is a halter style neck, with ultra long straps that drape over the shoulders, then cross over the waist in a classic goddess style, leaving the back nearly bare. There is a solid waistband and a simple hook closure in the back. The waistband was perfectly placed to follow the lines of the crossing straps, it is a true marvel really. The dress is unlined and is very free and easy flowing.
