.. Sterling: 1940s Thai Goddess (Mekala) Compact

.. This is a very large powder compact measuring 4" in diameter. It is sterling silver as marked. There is a maker's stamp as well, but its hard to decipher. It looks like E. Benschoni store. I think this was made in America as there are no hallmark stamps. I don't believe it was made in Thailand (no Siam mark anywhere) but the motif is unmistakably Mekkala, one of the most popular figure in Siamese/Thai jewelry.

.. Mekkala, legendary Thai nymph born from the sea creates lightning from her magic crystal ball (or diamond depending on who is telling the story) to fend off the advances of evil Ramasoon. In retaliation Ramasoon throws his hammer and makes thunder. This image of Mekkala was done in repousse' and as you can see in the close up photo, the detail is quite wonderful. Her face is lovely, her hands are graceful. Her garments and jewels are lovely and have wonderful folds and drape.

..The compact opens with a little push of a button, there is even a little ledge on the bottom to help you open it. Inside has a 1/8" deep compartment for the powder, on the other side is a mirror. The compact feels solid and is quite heavy... 178 grams heavy in fact.

condition: very good, a few light dings on the back as well as light surface scratches from being on a table. This I am sure can be buffed out. The mirror has aged and lost some of its silver backing, but it holds a reflection just fine
