..I am simply enamored by this coat. It is one of the most exciting examples of Japanese couture I have ever seen. It is a perfect synthesis between eastern and western fashion influences of the time.
..The fabric is an amazing silk brocade. The pattern is quite intricate, with trees, bodhi houses and little men on horses. Kyoto is famous for its lavish silks, and this is a stunning example of the artistry and quality of the region. The detail of the pattern is so intricate, it seems more like embroidery than a weave.
..The name S. Nomura is a mystery to me, but he (or could it be she) was obviously a master couturier. The only coats I have ever seen of this quality and craftsmanship were by the French masters (Dior, Fath, Balenciaga). This coat stands up to the very best of them. Every angle, every pin tuck, every pleat is perfect. The "sleeves" are separate pieces attached on each shoulder that feel almost like wings when you are wearing the piece.
..This lovely garment is fully lined in an ivory silk that is so soft and delicate, you will want to wear it with nothing else on underneath.
..The coat is in MINT CONDITION!!! I was told it was purchased by a great grandmother who had it in a trunk since it was purchased while traveling in Japan in the 1920s. I actually think it dates to the 1940s but I could be wrong on this one.
